TBA:22 Festival, in partnership with Arab.AMP Live, presents the legendary Sir Richard Bishop, guitarist and founding member of the band Sun City Girls. Internationally celebrated, Sir Richard Bishop “combines soulfulness and advanced technique with a panache that’s nearly unrivaled among today’s guitarists” (Dave Segal, OC Weekly). Arab.AMP Live also features Lime Rickey International, whose hybrid performances are built with voice, transactive surfaces, and movement. Portland’s own Descending Pharaohs join the night with music influenced by Arabic/Anatolian electric music, spiritual jazz, and British psych. Curated by Leyya Mona Tawil, Arab.AMP is a platform for experimental music and live art by artists of the SWANA diaspora and their allied communities. Arab.AMP Live is a nomadic live event series operating in partnership with venues and festivals inter/nationally.

Song in an Expanding Field

Amelia Bande & Leyya Mona Tawil [Lime Rickey International]
Presented by Curatorial Fellow Ethan Philbrick

FRIDAY | APRIL 29 | 8 PM EASTERN
St. Mark's Church and LIVESTREAMED via YouTube

Amelia Bande and Leyya Mona Tawil use song as a way to make and unmake spaces: Bande, creating surprising intimacies with audiences that pose the possibility of new political collectivities at the intersection of multiple languages, and Tawil, performing as Lime Rickey International, creating physical and sonic transmissions that mourn both ancient and future lands while challenging the politics of cultural legibility from an Arab perspective.

FUSEBOX FESTIVAL 2022
The Whisperers: Performance

Leyya Mona Tawil, Henna Chou, Parham Daghighi
Presented in partnership with The Contemporary AustinThis performance is a convergence of practices by Leyya Mona Tawil, Henna Chou, Chris Cogburn, and Parham Daghighi in response to the exhibition Tarek Atoui: The Whisperers, on view at The Contemporary Austin April 9 – August 14, 2022.
In conjunction with the exhibition, Chou, Cogburn, and Daghighi are musicians-in-residence at The Contemporary, where they experiment with materials used in Atoui’s practice and lead workshops with community collaborators. Tawil performed as a previous artist-in-residence with Atoui at the Sharjah Art Foundation (Sharjah, United Arab Emirates). With their individual modes of exploring sound and movement, the four artists will activate the installation through an improvised performance.

Lime Rickey International’s MALAYEEN.SPACE - an interactive digital work
Concept/Design -  Leyya Mona Tawil
Code/Design -  Andrej Hrončo

Premieres during British Council’s Net//Work Exhibition
May 4th - June 7th 2021; openly accessible from that point onward.

Exhibition site: https://wysingbroadcasts.art/
Direct site: https://malayeen.space/  (Chrome or Firefox)

MALAYEEN.SPACE is a gift exchange of song; constellations of lullabies, village lore, and battlecries transmitted to and from their origin. You are invited to sing into the stars. Your song will return, having traversed the modulations of time and place. Each exchange is uniquely yours. The audio transformations are governed by the distance (in km) between you and the location of your song’s origin, your distance in time to this place, and the song’s intent. An interactive experience in itself, Malayeen.Space also creates a community-generated sound archive of our diasporic imagination.
This project is conceived and developed by Leyya Mona Tawil, in collaboration with Andrej Hrončo. It exists as part of Lime Rickey International’s Noise & Nation - an accumulation of transmissions in performance, sound, and digital form that attend to temporality and a post-border dream.

Malayeen.Space was created during Tawil’s Net//Work Residency, presented by the British Council in partnership with Wysing Arts Centre and Digital Arts Studios. The Net//Work Exhibition will take place online on the Wysing Broadcasts site between 4 May and 7 June 2021.

AMP Gathering 2020 – an interactive experiment
https://amp-gathering.space/
June 30 – July 21, 2020
Presented by Pieter Performance Space + Arab.AMP
Directed by Pieter Virtual Resident Artist Leyya Mona Tawil, Arab.AMP is a nomadic platform for experimental live art, music and ideas from the SWANA diaspora and our allied communities. The AMP Gathering 2020 in virtual form allows the work of our featured artists to “gather on the page” – to exist in time with one another and our audience. You are invited to activate and play with these time-based works in real time, layering the materials one, some or all at once. We hope that this experiment will accumulate our voices with yours. This program is made possible with support from the California Arts Council and the City of Oakland Cultural Funding Program.
