March 5-9, 2025

Soundcloud Archive

Malayeen.Space is a cozy and dreamy installation where community members are invited to sit, reminisce, relax, and share folk songs from their diaspora. As Leyya calls it, it’s “an exchange of memory through songs; constellations of lullabies, village lore, and battlecries shared through the diaspora.” In short sessions, you (and your family, friends, or community members) can sing and share the origin story of your song. Using software created in collaboration with code designer Andrej Hrončo, your song will be transformed and immediately played back to you - modulated by distance, time, origin, and idea. This “future folksong” will be yours to keep, and, with your consent, will join the Malayeen.Space community-generated archive of future folksongs.

Palestinian Dabke Workshop with Al Juthoor of the Arab Diaspora
Saturday, December 7th

Director Wael Buhaissy of bay-area based Al Juthoor of the Arab Diaspora will lead this Palestinian Dabke workshop. Open to all levels, you’ll be in a welcoming environment to learn basic dabke steps and phrases, with more advanced variations introduced as well.

This event is part of The Sounds We Keep, curated by Leyya Mona Tawil. The Sounds We Keep is a performance series by AANM guest curator Leyya Mona Tawil, Director of Arab.AMP. Experimenting with themes inherent to our diaspora, the artists in this series use sound, voice, composition and movement in an attempt to create a record of our journey and invoke our future. Each program brings together Arab American artists from separate regions of the U.S. This tuning of diasporic forms through music and performance reveals the complexity of our cultural references through the instruments, the approaches and conversations that ensue.

Artistry & Resistance: Experiments in Palestinian American Artmaking
Wednesday, December 4th

Art-making is always an experiment– a testing of possibilities meant to create new meanings or forms and/or to teach audiences new ways of looking. Artistic experiments also often re-imagine pre-existing forms and histories and bring these into new spaces or moments in time. This roundtable brings together artists working in film, dance, and sound whose experimentations focus on bringing attention to important themes of Palestinian life, joy, and resistance.
  • Wael Buhaissy, Founder and Artistic Director of Al Juthoor;
  • Umayyah Cable, filmmaker and Assistant Professor of Arab American/Muslim American Studies & American Culture;
  • Leila Mire, PhD candidate of Performance Studies at UC Berkeley and member of Al Juthoor;
  • Leyya Mona Tawil, Creator of Lime Rickey International & Curator with the Arab American National Museum, Daring Dances, and Arab.AMP

Moderated by Clare Croft, Daring Dances curator and Associate Professor of American Culture. Co-sponsored by the Arab American and Muslim American Studies program, Arab.AMP, the Arab American and Muslim American Studies program, the Arab American National Museum, Daring Dances, and the Global Islamic Studies Center.

AMP x AANM Artist in Residence 2024 / Ebti

Things and stuff
حاجات ومحتاجات

Via Ebti / During my residency I want to look into the archives at the Arab American museum and work with the community to create a storybook of objects. A literary archive of sorts that tells our stories through the object we may have been carrying around with us to feel like we belong.

Borrowing the title of Sherihan’s Fawazeer I am hoping to engage in a conversation around what unites us as people with different histories, coming from different countries and now being “united” by a common denominator and have this conversation through objects.

How do we make home using objects?
What do we put in our bags/luggage when we leave
How do objects give us a sense of grounding and belonging?
What stories would the objects tell if they could speak, what language would it be in?
What memories do these objects and items hold?

Ebti is a multidisciplinary artist, a self-taught photographer and a translator living between Cairo and San Francisco. She has an MA in translation and intercultural studies from Johannes Gutenberg Universitat, Mainz, and an MFA in Fine Art from California College of the Arts. Ebti is part of “Right window” collective, “Off Hours” collective and is sitting on the curatorial council at Southern Exposure Gallery in San Francisco. Her work was shown in galleries around the US and Egypt. She currently teaches visual arts and photography at Performing Arts Workshop in San Francisco, Bay Area.

Donia Jarrar's BUTCHER
Presented in partnership with the Center for New Music

Concept album and live performance work by Dr. Donia Jarrar

Bay Area collaborators include Christian McLaurin, Lara Aburamadan, Manan Kocher
Center for New Music, San Francisco
Saturday March 23 at 8pm -
rsvp/tix
Sunday March 24 at 4pm -
rsvp/tix

This hybrid opera is based on Jarrar’s own experiences with domestic violence, in which she takes on the persona of a vigilante and antihero doling out punishments through the power wielded to her via a sonic cleaver. While her role is rooted in protecting victims and removing the social stigma around domestic violence in our community, she is by no means just or angelic. Jarrar aims to explore what is possible when women, non-binary people and queers of all genders defy, disrupt and destroy the patriarchy through violent means and without mercy, drawing inspiration from horror, science-fiction and the erotic. BUTCHER combines grandiose piano solo pieces with songs written for bass and piano, synthesizer, and oral histories collected from established North African feminist figures and local survivors of DV and intimate partner violence. It has developed into a theatrical work as well, with the songs presenting themselves across 4 acts.

FREE PALESTINE string quartets by John King
Presented by the Arab American National Museum and Arab.AMP

Friday, February 16, 2024 @ 8pm

The Auditorium at Arab American National Museum, Dearborn, MI
More info
here.FREE PALESTINE is an ongoing set of pieces employing Arabic pitch and rhythmic modes which explore sonic, structural and temporal freedoms. The pieces began being titled with the predominant maqam used. Then their titles changed to become the original historic names of Palestinian villages from pre-1948 Palestine, before the Nakbah. These ethnically cleansed villages are significant historically as well as for the current conditions of the ongoing Occupation and Siege. These names for me focus the resistance to the policies of Apartheid, the illegality of the Occupation, and the crimes perpetrated on the people who continue to resist in their steadfast fight for equal rights, equal justice, equal freedoms, and the right of return to their homeland. These villages, from the river to the sea, and their former and future inhabitants must always be acknowledged and kept in our memories.

At the AANM, King’s compositions will be performed by The Entropy String Quartet featuring Maritza Figueroa-Garibay, Mike Khoury, Indira Edwards and Jack O’Brien.

MALAYEEN.SPACE aims to revive and preserve cultural narratives that are at risk of being forgotten by encouraging participants to “SING TO THE STARS!”. Simulating a recording studio, Leyya Mona Tawil’s installation invites participants to enter and contribute their own recordings. Once a recording is submitted, the song that plays back is modulated by the participant’s unique answers. The audio transformations are governed by the distance (in km) between the contributor and the location of their song’s origin, their distance in time to this place, and the song’s intent.

By involving visitors in the process of recording and sharing, the installation transforms into an evolving archive. By highlighting the importance of remembering and celebrating the stories and traditions of diasporic communities, MALAYEEN.SPACE addresses sacredness as something that is an ongoing, participatory narrative rather than a static collection.

Lime Rickey International’s MALAYEEN.SPACE - an interactive digital work
Concept/Design -  Leyya Mona Tawil
Code/Design -  Andrej Hrončo

Premieres during British Council’s Net//Work Exhibition
May 4th - June 7th 2021; openly accessible from that point onward.

Exhibition site: https://wysingbroadcasts.art/
Direct site: https://malayeen.space/  (Chrome or Firefox)

MALAYEEN.SPACE is a gift exchange of song; constellations of lullabies, village lore, and battlecries transmitted to and from their origin. You are invited to sing into the stars. Your song will return, having traversed the modulations of time and place. Each exchange is uniquely yours. The audio transformations are governed by the distance (in km) between you and the location of your song’s origin, your distance in time to this place, and the song’s intent. An interactive experience in itself, Malayeen.Space also creates a community-generated sound archive of our diasporic imagination.
This project is conceived and developed by Leyya Mona Tawil, in collaboration with Andrej Hrončo. It exists as part of Lime Rickey International’s Noise & Nation - an accumulation of transmissions in performance, sound, and digital form that attend to temporality and a post-border dream.

Malayeen.Space was created during Tawil’s Net//Work Residency, presented by the British Council in partnership with Wysing Arts Centre and Digital Arts Studios. The Net//Work Exhibition will take place online on the Wysing Broadcasts site between 4 May and 7 June 2021.

CRUCIAL LANGUAGE / DIRAR KALASH & JAMAL R. MOOREKalash (Haifa, Palestine) and Moore (Baltimore, US) in conversation through performance and discussion. Their solo performances on this program vibrate into the struggle. In a conversation led by Tawil, Kalash and Moore look for parallels in their Indigenous, Black and international music legacies; discussing what they have found along their path. “Crucial Language” is an invocation and reflection on unity as 2020 comes to a close.

AMP Gathering 2020 – an interactive experiment
https://amp-gathering.space/
June 30 – July 21, 2020
Presented by Pieter Performance Space + Arab.AMP
Directed by Pieter Virtual Resident Artist Leyya Mona Tawil, Arab.AMP is a nomadic platform for experimental live art, music and ideas from the SWANA diaspora and our allied communities. The AMP Gathering 2020 in virtual form allows the work of our featured artists to “gather on the page” – to exist in time with one another and our audience. You are invited to activate and play with these time-based works in real time, layering the materials one, some or all at once. We hope that this experiment will accumulate our voices with yours. This program is made possible with support from the California Arts Council and the City of Oakland Cultural Funding Program.
